Tell your son to tell that teacher they are dead WRONG! Both thmbus on BOTH hands are always 1. Both index fingers are 2, middle fingers are 3, ring fingers are 4, and little fingers are always 5. There is no messing around with these basic fundamentals because once you eventually get into reading sheet music you will see these numbers reflected in more difficult musical compositions (as recommendations of which fingers to use)*
